Deal With Procrastination the Right Way: Emotional Management

There are many reasons for why we procrastinate. We put off doing important to-dos because they often trigger some form of negativity. Laziness and disinterest are negative feelings stemming from fear. We fear other people’s judgement, rejection, abandonment, and discouragement.

Let’s face our tendency to procrastinate by managing our negative emotions.

1.    Awareness

We may not even be aware that we are actually afraid of something. Underlying fears usually live in our subconscious.

If you find yourself wasting work hours, ask yourself “Why?” Why are you spending time on non-productive activities? What are you scared of?

Once you gain insight into your emotional world, you may know how to deal with specific fears head-on. Realizing what exactly makes you afraid wins half the battle on procrastination. All you do now is act on a solution.

2.    Take Action

Use the insights you gained from your emotional evaluation and turn your procrastination habits around.

One of the best ways to keep your undivided attention on track is to focus on work. Maintain the quality of your work by concentrating on doing it according to your best standards. Don’t stress about what you think others would say. Seek constructive feedback instead from qualified people. They can give you an honest gauge about your work’s worth.

Write a concrete plan of your tasks with a schedule to keep organized and productive. Doing so allows you to know where you can be flexible or need to be strict with work time.

3.    Environment

If you surround yourself with procrastinators, you’re likely to start postponing again. Instead, work with people who have traits that inspire you to perform better and improve your work attitudes.  Upgrade your productivity by embracing their positive attitudes.
